The Merriweather Horns, Columbia Maryland -
Enter

The Merriweather Horns are five large-scale installations of acoustical sculptures designed by the artist for the new entrances to Symphony Woods in Columbia, Maryland. The five installations are titled Skyhorns (east entry), Landhorns (northwest entry), Song Cycles (central entry), Tone Reeds (southwest entry) and Pathfinders (park-wide wayfinding devices). These almost botanical forms were inspired by the park's long history of music in the midst of nature. They engage visitors at entryways and pathway intersections, where they capture ambient light by day and illuminate from within at night.

The Merriweather Horns produce subtle, high quality musical soundscapes at low sound levels from tones produced by indigenous wildlife. The specially composed soundscapes will not resemble traditional music, but will express melody and harmony at the boundry between the human and natural worlds.

Symphony Woods is undergoing a transformation into a new kind of cultural destination forming around Merriweather Post Pavilion at the heart of Columbia, under the leadership of the Inner Arbor Trust. Cochran Studio joins an international design team for the park that includes lead designers Mahan Rykiel Associates, Martha Schwartz Partners, Marc Fornes of theverymany, nArchitects, Arup and other firms.
