Each “luminaire” or set of glass fins is linked to one of twelve artistic marker stones set into prominent brick columns along the cross streets of Franklin, Mulberry, and Payson. These streets are used by children walking to school. Each plaque displays an image and a 100-word “Story of Strength" from West Baltimore—a true account of a person, group, or event that exemplified the enduring character of the people of West Baltimore during the decades that became their darkest. Together the 12 sculptures and 12 plaques form a public art installation titled The Shining Dark, highlighting the endurance of West Baltimore.
As an example, the artist nominated the great West Baltimore poet Lucille Clifton, who wrote the poem that gave The Shining Dark its title. Ms. Clifton lived and taught in West Baltimore in the 1970s as an unknown, brilliant writer powerfully confronting the darkness she encountered in the world. She became artist-in-residence at nearby Coppin State College and the Poet Laureate of Maryland. |
